Autonomy Engineer

Matternet

Join our team as an Autonomy Engineer, where you will develop the onboard decision-making systems that enable our aircraft to complete deliveries safely and reliably on autonomous Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) missions.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in robotics, aerospace engineering, or computer science, with experience in developing autonomy, planning, or decision-making software for robots, drones, or autonomous vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • You will design and implement key aircraft behaviors, develop path planning and trajectory generation, and validate behaviors in simulation and flight tests.
  • Experience validating software in simulation and on real hardware

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong proficiency in C++ (C++11 and later) and Python, including multithreading and real-time messaging
  • Proficiency with version control and peer code review workflows (e.g., Git)
  • Solid foundation in path planning and applied math (geometry, coordinate transforms, kinematics) for navigation and avoidance
  • Experience with state machines, behavior trees, or similar frameworks for decision-making
  • Strong Linux background
  • 3+ years developing autonomy, planning, or decision-making software for robots, drones, or autonomous vehicles
  • Clear technical communication and strong cross-disciplinary teamwork
  • Familiarity with an autopilot stack such as ArduPilot or PX4
  • Experience with distributed systems or networking

Preferred

UAV, aerospace, or other safety-critical, regulated product experience

  • Experience with collision avoidance and deconfliction with crewed and uncrewed air traffic
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 and simulation environments such as Gazebo
  • Experience with Docker and containerized build, test, and deployment
  • Experience using AI coding assistants to accelerate development
