Lead Engineer - Front End Platform & Design System

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lead Engineer – Front End Platform & Design System based in Australia.

The Lead Engineer will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction and evolution of a large-scale front-end engineering platform. You will establish shared tools, frameworks, design systems, and development standards that enable engineering teams to deliver high-quality products more efficiently and consistently.

Working across engineering, product, design, and infrastructure, you will drive technical alignment and influence strategic decisions across multiple teams. You will help modernize the front-end technology stack, improve development workflows, and strengthen performance, accessibility, and security.

Alongside your technical contributions, you will mentor engineers, promote engineering excellence, and foster a collaborative development culture. This is an opportunity to combine hands-on technical leadership with long-term platform strategy in a flexible, distributed working environment.

Accountabilities

Lead the technical vision, architecture, and strategic direction of the front-end platform, ensuring alignment with broader engineering objectives and product requirements.

Drive the development and continuous improvement of shared front-end foundations, including component libraries, design systems, reusable frameworks, and developer tooling.

Guide the adoption and evolution of modern front-end technologies, particularly React, TypeScript, and associated development tools and frameworks.

Collaborate with engineering, product, design, and infrastructure teams to establish consistent technical standards and deliver scalable solutions across the organization.

Identify technical gaps, architectural challenges, and opportunities for improvement that may affect engineering productivity, product quality, or platform performance.

Influence and contribute to CI/CD strategy and delivery pipeline improvements, promoting reliable, efficient, and automated software delivery practices.

Define and shape the long-term roadmap for front-end performance, accessibility, maintainability, security, and developer experience.

Lead initiatives to modernize legacy front-end pages and components using Harness Engineering principles and AI-enabled development approaches.

Champion engineering best practices, including automated testing, test-driven development (TDD), code quality, and maintainable system design.

Design and guide the implementation of secure, scalable, and resilient architectures, including distributed systems where appropriate.

Build strong relationships across technical and non-technical teams, encouraging knowledge sharing, constructive discussions, and cross-functional collaboration.

Provide technical mentorship and coaching to engineers, helping them strengthen their capabilities and progress toward senior technical positions.

Balance long-term architectural planning with hands-on technical problem-solving, stepping in when teams require technical guidance or support.

Promote the effective use of AI tools and emerging engineering practices to improve development efficiency, solve complex problems, and accelerate innovation.

Requirements

Extensive experience in front-end engineering, with deep technical expertise and the ability to quickly adapt to new programming languages, frameworks, and development tools.

Strong hands-on experience with modern front-end technologies, particularly React, TypeScript, and their associated ecosystems.

Demonstrated experience designing, developing, or leading large-scale shared platforms, design systems, component libraries, or developer experience initiatives.

Solid understanding of CI/CD concepts, automated testing, test-driven development (TDD), and modern software delivery practices.

Proven ability to design secure, scalable, maintainable, and high-performing software systems, including distributed architectures.

Experience influencing technical strategy, architectural decisions, and engineering roadmaps across multiple teams and organizational functions.

Strong understanding of front-end performance optimization, accessibility standards, reusable component design, and software quality.

Ability to combine strategic technical thinking with practical, hands-on engineering expertise and effective problem-solving.

Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers, with a genuine interest in supporting their professional growth.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across engineering, product, design, and infrastructure teams.

A collaborative approach to technical discussions and disagreements, with the ability to consider different perspectives and reach solutions that benefit the wider organization.

Strong ownership, initiative, and adaptability, particularly when managing complex, open-ended challenges involving multiple teams.

Experience using AI-powered development tools and applying AI principles to improve engineering workflows, productivity, and problem-solving.
