R&D Writing System Engineer Description - Description The Fluids Technology and Integration (FTI) R&D lab is a fast paced, dynamic, and innovative organization that develops ink and micro-fluidic technologies that advance print applications across HP’s industry leading print businesses.
Specialist-level engineer primarily supports the PageWide Industrial (PWI) business by leading R&D development and integration of ink and printhead solutions that expand the PWI product portfolio and market space. The role combines hands-on characterization, experimental design, advanced problem solving, and technical leadership to advance technology from ideation to maturation to support new product introduction (NPI).
Responsibilities
- Ink, printhead & fluidic-architecture development Partner with ink chemists to optimize formulations for print quality, thermal inkjet (TIJ) jettability, drop quality, reliability, durability, and system compatibility.
- Collaborate with printhead, silicon, and fluidic-design teams to optimize microfluidic designs and firing conditions, define operating windows, optimize print performance, and resolve ink–printhead interactions. undefined
System design & integration
- Translate product and program needs into system requirements , performance metrics, acceptance criteria, and technical milestones.
- Define and evolve characterization methods , failure criteria, measurement systems, and accelerated tests for system representative print performance.
- Develop, qualify, document, and improve R&D laboratory capabilities , including testbeds, fixtures, fluid-delivery systems, recipes, automation, analysis tools, and data-reporting workflows.
- Integrate, optimize, and validate performance of ink and printhead architecture in hardware, software, and electrical systems to meet performance targets and balance design tradeoffs through hands on experimentation . undefined
Experimental design and advanced problem solving
- Design and execute robust experiments and DOEs to characterize performance, identify sensitivities and failure mechanisms, and validate design improvements using controlled configurations and reliable data.
- Lead root-cause investigations across ink, printhead, and system using advanced problem solving methodologies ; test hypotheses and recommend solutions grounded in data and mechanistic understanding.
- Develop test methods and laboratory capabilities for image quality, durability, reliability, and jettability; correlate testbed results with press performance and define and execute targeted PWI system validation.
- Develop and apply modeling, statistical analysis, automation, and AI-assisted tools to accelerate learning and improve test efficiency.
- Technical leadership and program execution Assess technical readiness and risks , coordinate priorities, and support scale-up, qualification, and transfer of ink and fluidic technologies into products.
- Guide and align cross-functional decisions with clear recommendations on performance, operating windows, risks, and next steps.
- Coordinate activities across engineers, chemists, and technicians through clear test plans, methods, results interpretations and recommendations.
- & Scope Impacts multiple teams and may act as a team or project leader providing direction to team activities and facilitates information validation and team decision making process.
- Complexity Responds to moderately complex issues within established guidelines.
Requirements
- Systems thinking across ink chemistry, printhead architecture, fluidics, and hardware, software, and electrical systems.
- Hands on experimentation and system design (hardware, electrical, software, and fluids) Advanced mechanistic problem solving, experimental design, applied statistics, measurement systems, and data analysis.
- Independent technical judgment, requirements definition, and evaluation of performance tradeoffs and risks.
- Project planning, prioritization, adaptability, and accountability for deliverables.
- Clear technical communication, cross-functional influence, collaboration, and mentoring; fluent spoken and written English.
- Creativity in developing methods, tools, and intellectual property.
- Cross-Org Skills Effective Communication Results Orientation Learning Agility Digital Fluency Customer Centricity Education & Experience Recommended • Four-year or Graduate Degree in Electrical Engineering, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence. • Typically has 4-7 years of work experience, preferably in electrical design and tools, software packages, architecture of electronic hardware, or a related field or an advanced degree with 3-5 years of work experience.
Preferred
- Experience with Python, MATLAB, JMP, or equivalent analysis and automation tools is desirable.
