Application close date: Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion.
Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of Blue Origin corporate functions, providing centralized support across Blue Origin business unit teams, functions, and locations. As Blue's Senior Manager of Facilities Design Structural Engineering, you will build and lead the team that designs and sustains the structures behind Blue's Florida operations.
Your team of structural engineers and designers will own structural design for new buildings, expansions and modifications to existing facilities, and the ongoing sustainment of the buildings, foundations, and special structures that support manufacturing, processing, test, and launch.
Our structures are not typical commercial buildings: high-bay facilities sized around large launch vehicles, heavy overhead cranes, foundations for test and processing equipment, and structures that must perform in a coastal, corrosive, hurricane-exposed environment near an active launch range.
Existing facilities are constantly being modified for new equipment and processes, and each change needs a verified load path. You will make sure this work is designed right the first time, delivered quickly, and that deterioration in operating facilities is caught and corrected early.
You will be a people leader and a hands-on technical leader: hiring and developing a high-performing team, setting structural design standards, and reviewing the team's most important work.
You will partner closely with civil, electrical, mechanical, and fire protection design leads, with construction and project management, with tooling and ground support equipment teams, and with facilities maintenance and operations.
Responsibilities Lead, hire, mentor, and develop a team of facility structural engineers and designers; set clear priorities, expectations, and career paths; and build a team culture of safety, ownership, and technical excellence.
Own structural design for new buildings and expansions, including high-bay manufacturing and integration facilities, crane runways and supports, equipment foundations, platforms, pipe and utility supports, and launch-site structures. Own structural engineering for modifications to existing facilities, including load-path verification and strengthening for new cranes, equipment, tooling, and roof or floor loads.
Own structural sustainment engineering for operating facilities: condition assessments, corrosion and concrete deterioration evaluation, repair designs, and engineering support to facilities maintenance and operations teams. Set structural design criteria, standards, and details, including wind and hurricane design for coastal Florida sites, crane and equipment loads, and corrosion-resistant detailing.
Serve as, or assign and oversee, the structural engineer of record; review and approve calculations, drawings, specifications, and shop drawings for quality, code compliance, and constructability. Manage outside structural A/E consultants: define scope, review deliverables, and hold firms to schedule, quality, and budget.
Plan and manage the team's workload, schedule, and budget across a portfolio of concurrent projects; forecast staffing and consultant needs; and escalate risks early. Coordinate with authorities having jurisdiction, including base and range requirements at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center, on structural permitting and special inspections.
Translate manufacturing, tooling, ground support equipment, and operations needs into structural requirements, and challenge requirements that add cost without adding safety or performance. Support construction and turnover: submittals, RFIs, field changes, and closeout; and capture lessons learned in standards.
Lead engineering response to structural incidents and anomalies, including root cause and corrective action. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Active Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license in at least one U.S.
state, with the ability to obtain Florida licensure. 12+ years of progressive structural engineering experience on industrial, manufacturing, infrastructure, or heavy commercial facilities. 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams, including direct people management (hiring, performance management, and development).
Experience designing steel and concrete structures, foundations, and crane-supporting structures. Experience evaluating and retrofitting existing structures, including condition assessment and repair design. Working knowledge of IBC / Florida Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI 318, and AISC 360. Experience serving as engineer of record and producing sealed structural construction documents.
Experience managing outside A/E consultants and multiple concurrent projects to schedule and budget. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to brief leadership, building officials, and contractors clearly. Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion. Preferred Qualifications Structural Engineer (SE) license.
Active Florida PE license. Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related field. Experience with high-wind and hurricane design and corrosion-resistant design in coastal environments. Experience with heavy overhead crane systems, large-span high-bay structures, or vibration-sensitive equipment foundations.
Experience with blast, overpressure, or other special-hazard structural design, and with launch, test stand, or propellant facility structures. Experience on federal installations or with NASA, U.S. Space Force, or USACE design review processes. Experience with structural sustainment or asset management programs for operating facilities.
Experience establishing or scaling an in-house engineering team or design standards. Additional Requirements Must be able to pass a U.S. Air Force / Space Force background check for base access at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Work is performed in a mix of office, operating facility, and active construction environments, including launch-site areas.
Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions — heat, rain, fumes, odors, and noise. Must be available to work extended hours as needed to support critical construction, operations, and program milestones. Willingness to travel to other Blue Origin sites, agencies, vendors, and contractors as required (occasional, approximately 10%).
