Senior Software Engineer (Android)

Join Toast, a leading restaurant technology platform, as a Senior Software Engineer (Android). In this role, you will bridge the gap between hardware and software to build the foundational platform for Toast POS devices. You will own the design and delivery of features across Toast's Android system applications, write technical designs, build reliable background services, lead Android application upgrades, and mentor engineers on the team. You will collaborate with various teams to build scalable systems and leverage cutting-edge AI tools to enhance your development workflow.

Responsibilities

• Solid understanding of Android application and service lifecycles, background work, and inter-process communication
• Experience using AI tools throughout the development lifecycle, from design and coding to testing and debugging
• Deep experience with standard Android architecture patterns & libraries such as Hilt, AndroidX libraries, and Kotlin Coroutines
• Experience shipping software to a large fleet of devices (e.g., OTA updates, staged rollouts)
• Understanding of mobile device management (MDM) concepts and enterprise device management platforms
• Experience with the Android framework, AOSP, system services, or system apps written in Kotlin or Java

Requirements

6+ years of Android application development experience

• Proficient in a modern object-oriented programming language such as Kotlin or Java
• Experience leading a cross-functional project with multiple engineers, product, QA, & design teams on a project from initial ideation through launch and supporting it in production
• Clear written and verbal communication, including writing technical designs
• Proven ability to debug complex issues across the app, framework, and OS layers using tools such as adb, logcat, and bug reports
• Experience writing automated tests using Robot, UIAutomator or other testing frameworks
• Experience with Android Device Owner / Device Policy Controller APIs
• Experience developing Android software for devices domain accounting for offline mode, battery impact, background services, etc
