Sr. Electric Power Controls Engineer

Rivian Automotive, LLC

Role Summary Lead the design, simulation, and implementation of high-performance digital control algorithms for power converters (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC). You will bridge control theory and embedded hardware, taking high-bandwidth feedback loops from dynamic simulation to real-time firmware execution and lab validation. Responsibilities Control Design & Modulation: Develop discrete-time closed-loop control architectures (voltage, current, flux observers) and advanced modulation schemes (SVPWM, interleaved, phase-shifted). Modeling & Simulation: Build high-fidelity converter models in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS to analyze stability margins, transient dynamics, and power losses. Firmware Implementation: Architect and optimize deterministic, real-time embedded C code on target DSPs/microcontrollers (e.g., TI C2000, ARM Cortex-M/R). Hardware Integration & Bench Tuning: Lead system bring-up and debug dynamic loop behavior on physical hardware using frequency response analyzers, scopes, and high-power test equipment. Protection & Robustness: Implement high-speed digital fault protection (OCP, OVP, thermal derating) and lead root-cause troubleshooting of hardware/software anomalies. Technical Mentorship: Guide junior engineers in control modeling, schematic reviews, and lab safety practices. Qualifications Required: Master’s degree with 3–5+ years of experience, or a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering specializing in power electronics or control systems. Deep knowledge of classical and digital control theory (z-domain analysis, discrete filters, sampling delays). Expert proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS for dynamic system modeling. Advanced embedded C skills for real-time control (direct peripheral configuration: PWM, ADC sync, timers). In-depth understanding of standard and complex topologies (bidirectional PFC, LLC/CLLC, DAB, 3-phase inverters). Proven track record of independently bringing up converters and tuning loops on physical, high-power hardware. Preferred: Direct experience with the TI C2000 MCU and TI Sitara families. Familiarity with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platforms (e.g., Typhoon HIL, Plecs Real Time Hardware). Experience with SiC/GaN wide-bandgap semiconductor devices.
