Helpware is seeking a Java Developer to join a large-scale enterprise modernization initiative focused on transforming legacy COBOL/CICS applications into a modern Java-based architecture. This is an excellent opportunity for developers with 3 years of commercial experience to contribute to a long-term enterprise project in healthcare industry while working with established frameworks, clear technical specifications, and experienced engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Java-based solutions according to detailed technical specifications provided by subject matter experts
  • Implement Java Enterprise components, including handlers, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs), and Data Access Objects (DAOs)
  • Develop business logic and database interaction layers
  • Create and optimize SQL queries and database integrations
  • Write, execute, and maintain unit tests
  • Deliver clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following established coding standards
  • Participate in code reviews and support integration activities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful project delivery

Requirements

  • 8–12 months with possible extension
  • 3+ years of commercial Java development experience

Strong Java, Cobol, and enterprise application development background

  • Actian DataConnect (version 11.5 or higher preferred): building and maintaining integration maps and processes
  • HIPAA X12 EDI experience (834, 835, 837, 270/271, 276/277), including X12-to-XML transformation
  • XML, XSLT, and DTD/schema handling
  • Message queue integration (IBM MQ/JMS) a plus
  • SQL/database and API/integration experience
  • Comfortable working within an established application architecture
  • English level - B2 or better
  • Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE)
  • Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB)
  • Actian DataConnec
  • Data Access Objects (DAO)
  • IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD)
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server

Preferred

  • Healthcare payer experience strongly preferred; Medicare/Medicaid a plus
  • Angular-based frontend ecosystem (backend-focused role)
