Mechanical Engineer

Sonos

At Sonos we want to create the ultimate listening experience for our customers and know that it starts by listening to each other. As part of the Sonos team, you’ll collaborate with people of all styles, skill sets, and backgrounds to realize our vision while fostering a community where everyone feels included and empowered to do the best work of their lives. Sonos is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer who will design and engineer transducers and other acoustical components from concept to launch, and lead new technology development. You will work with cross-functional teams located at multiple sites distributed globally to meet targets for schedule, functionality, cost, and quality. You will also coordinate development across engineering, product & program management, sourcing, and operations. The ideal candidate should have the ability to work well under pressure and be able to manage multiple projects and issues simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Project Leadership: Scope, plan, and advise new mechanical architectures and component initiatives.
  • Verify the feasibility of initial transducer design and system targets, and provide the final mechanical design solution.
  • Design various mechanical components, transducer, and mechanisms autonomously using CAD software (NX, Creo, preferably Onshape).
  • Lead mechanical design reviews from structural, manufacturing, and assembly perspectives.
  • Prototype and evaluate mechanical designs.
  • Generate and implement mechanical reliability and stress test plans.
  • Debug mechanical and structural issues coming out of prototyping and product builds.
  • Communicate internally and externally unsupervised related to mechanical product development.

Requirements

  • Expertise in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Solid experience with FEA simulation tools (modal and strength analysis) such as COMSOL or Ansys.

Proactive Development

Anticipate mechanical design work and cross-functional needs related to the transducer and product architectures without direction.

FEA & Simulation

Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA)—specifically modal and strength analysis—using simulation tools like COMSOL or Ansys to validate structural integrity.

Qualifications

Education: BS or above degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.

Experience

5+ years’ experience in mechanical design, preferably within consumer electronics, audio hardware, or high-technology products.

Core Traits

Be passionate and persistent about technology, innovation, and big challenging tasks. A strong team player who is highly self-motivated and willing to take ownership.

CAD Proficiency

Advanced 3D modeling skills using CAD software, highly preferred Onshape.

Design Expertise

Applied knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and 2D/3D tolerance analysis.

Product Development

Good understanding of product development processes, particularly for high-technology products.

Manufacturing Knowledge

Good understanding of mechanical component material properties, selection, and high-volume manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, die casting, stamping and CNC, etc.).

Mobility

Ability to travel domestically and internationally, sometimes with short notice.

Communication Skills

Skilled in communication internally and externally. Fluency in English is required; bilingual proficiency in Mandarin is preferred. Your profile will be reviewed and you'll hear from us once we have an update. At Sonos we take the time to hire right and appreciate your patience.
